Would you like to get on your bike during your active camping vacation in Annecy in the Northern Alps? Would you like to pedal freely with your hair blowing in the wind along a secure cycle path, alone, as a couple, with your children or your friends? Head for the greenway along Lake Annecy.
One of France’s oldest greenways, 35 km long
On one side, the capricious Lake Annecy, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Alps. On the other, the mountains. And in the middle, you and your bike on a greenway reserved for cyclists, walkers, runners and inline skaters.
One of the most beautiful cycle routes around the lake! Created in 1974, the Lake Annecy Greenway is one of the oldest cycle paths in France. And unquestionably one of the most beautiful.
This 35 km asphalt route follows the old railway line that connected Annecy with Albertville.
In fact, the attentive cyclist will notice the remains of this old railroad line when he sees the old station at Doussard and the tunnel at Duingt through which the trains used to run.
Lake Annecy by bike
You’ve just adjusted your helmet and checked the condition of your brakes? The ride can begin. From Doussard, you ride along the western shore of the lake to Lathuile, Duingt, Saint-Jorioz, Sévrier and Annecy. The trail remains permanently glued to the lake shore. It’s wide enough (3 meters, two-way traffic) to allow all users to enjoy the pleasures of cycling while admiring the waters of the lake and the peaks of the Bauges massif. In the center of Annecy, the path runs alongside the lake, past the Impérial Palace and Annecy-le-Vieux, to reach the other side of the lake.
The village of Veyrier doesn’t have its own cycle path, so it’s the only place that’s a little less safe, but it’s very short. The trail continues to Menthon Saint Bernard and then climbs steadily to the top of Talloires village. A beautiful descent rewards you for your efforts, with a breathtaking view of the lake. Return to the Annecy campsites on the brand-new cycle path that runs under the national road to La Ravoire and Les Fontaines in complete safety.
A walk for everyone
With or without wind, the Lake Annecy Greenway is accessible to all cyclists, including those with reduced mobility. On the west bank, the gradient is very slight or non-existent, so you’ll almost always be riding on a flat, paved track in excellent condition. Children can ride in complete safety, as motorized vehicles are prohibited and the track is well separated from the road. In several places, you’ll find picnic areas on the edge of the trail, where you can take a break for lunch with family or friends, and enjoy the reflection of the mountains in the lake waters.
On the east side, the gradient is reasonable in the direction of Annecy > Doussard, and the track is almost always independent of the road.
Are you a cyclist or bike tourer without equipment? You’ll find a range of bike and mountain bike rentals along this section of the cycle route! In summer, at the end of your ride, you can swap your two-wheeler for a kayak or stand-up paddle and venture out into the middle of the lake. With a refreshing swim to relax your muscles, of course!
